David Clinton Murray

    David Clinton Murray was born April 6, 1858 in Oriskany Falls to Edwin R. and Frances S. Murray. The family moved to Utica when David was nine. After completing his education at Utica Free Academy he was hired as an assistant bookkeeper at the First National Bank. By the time he was 21 he was promoted to be a discount clerk.

    David Clinton Murray left the Bank and entered the hop business under J.H. Hines. During the summers he worked as a bookkeeper at the American Hotel in Richfield Springs. In 1881, Mr. Murray entered into the wholesale grocery business with H.I. Johnson near the Old Opera House on LaFayette Street. Later they moved to a new building on Hotel Street. In 1911, the company brought a lot on Whitesboro Street and erected a large building. A few years later the business was sold , turned over and became part of Austin Nichols and Company. David Clinton Murray became a director of that corporation.    

    Even when he was involved in the Grocery business David Clinton Murray stayed involved in other areas. He was director/vice president/ and president of many companies etc. When he was 26 he was appointed a director of the Second National Bank. When the Utica Trust & Deposit Company was organized he was named a director and later its first Vice President. Other companies he hold a high positions include: Utica Steam Cotton Company; Oneida County Trust Co; Northern New York Trust Company; Duofold Underware Co; J.H. Williams Manufacturing Co; Utica Valve and Fixture Company; and Donneconna Paper Company. He was a charter member of the Commercial Travelers' Mutual Association; Fort Schuyler Club and Yahnundasis Golf Club.

    On January 31, 1883 David Clinton Murray married Mary Louise Williams. They had two children: Margaret Louise and James Burch. 

    David Clinton Murray died September 13, 1920 and is buried in Plot 34A Lot 4500 of Forest Hill Cemetery.

      Walter J. Helfert was born in Utica on March 1, 1875 to Philip and Theresa Helfert.      According to his obituary Walter J. Helfert was one of the country's greatest bicycle racers. The first race he entered was July 4, 1893 which went by the old Utica Opera House on Lafayette Street to Yorkville and back. He won by three minutes. He won more contests at Utica Park; Ilion; Oneonta; and he captured the three-mile state title at Cohoes. Alexander Seward

      Alexander Seward was born on Nov 28, 1816 to Mr. and Mrs. Asahel Seward (who published Utica' first newspaper). He attended Utica Academy; Utica High School; and Cazenovia Seminary. He graduated from Hamilton College and Union College (1836).     Alexander Seward studied law with Joshua A. Spencer and Mann and Edmonds. in 1840, started practicing law. At the same time he was appointed examiner in chancery.     In 1843, Alexander Seward became editor and proprietor of the Daily Gazette. He was the head of the newspaper for nine years. Charles L. Dobson

       Charles Leaf Dobson was born April 23, 1823 in Pickering, England to William N. and Margaret Dobson. The family came to the US and settled in Westmoreland in 1828. They moved to Utica in 1840. When Charles L. Dobson was 19 he entered the fruit and candy business. In 1852, he entered the grocery business which he sold in 1862 to his brother.     In 1850, Charles L. Dobson opened a dancing academy in Oneida Square called Dobson's Hall. Before Dobson's Hall opened he gave lessons in different locations around Utica including Washington and Apollo Halls. He retired in 1890. At the time he was the leading dance teacher in Central NY.     Charles L. Dobson invested in real estate. He owned the whole point south of Oneida Square, from Oneida Hall on Oneida Street through to Genesee Street.
