Smith M. Lindsley

     Smith M. Lindsley was born in Monticello, NY on April 11, 1847 to Rufus B. Lindsley. He was valedictorian of his class at Monticello Academy. After Monticello Academy he graduated from Wyoming Seminary and College. Smith M. Lindsley joined the faculty at Wyoming Seminary and College for one year after he graduated.

    Smith M. Lindsley left the faculty to read law in Wilkesbarre, PA. He came to Utica in 1869 and joined the law office of Francis Kernan. He was admitted to the bar the following year. 

    Smith M. Lindsley was a Democrat. In 1872, he was elected city attorney. He served as city attorney for two terms. After that he refused any political honors including nomination as a Justice of the Supreme Court. In 1885, Smith M. Lindsley became president of the First National Bank of Chittenango, which he held until he passed away. He was also a member of the Utica Court House Commission. 

    Smith M. Lindsley was a Mason, Odd Fellow and a prominent member of the Royal Arcanum, which he served as chief executive from 1887.

    In 1873, Smith M. Lindsley married Dorsilla J. Johnston in Bayville, NY. Dorsilla was the daughter of John W. and Elizabeth Calkin Johnston. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College the previous year.  She was later regent of the Oneida Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. They had two children Lew Johnston who passed away Dec 1 1877 at the age of three and Orma who passed away at the age of 18 on Nov 27, 1894. Both children passed away of Diphtheria. 

    Smith M. Lindsley passed away on May 17, 1909 of diabetes. Dorsilla passed away on Oct 20, 1922. The Lindsley family are buried in Plot 35 lot 2573 of Forest Hill Cemetery.
