Thomas Hill Hubbard

     Thomas Hill Hubbard was born on December 6, 1781 in New Haven Connecticut. He studied law in Troy, NY. Mr. Hubbard was admitted to the New York State Bar either in 1804 or 1805. About 1805, Thomas Hill Hubbard became the second attorney to settle in Hamilton, NY. On March 26, 1806 he was appointed Madison County Surrogate. He served almost ten years until Feb 26, 1816. During his time as Surrogate he also held other positions including Master in Chancery. In 1816, Thomas Hill Hubbard was appointed as District Attorney for the seventh district which covered Oneida, Madison, Herkimer and Otsego Countries. In 1818, when separate officers were appointed for he each country he was appointed DA of Madison County a position he stayed in until 1821.

    In 1817, Thomas Hill Hubbard was elected the Representative to the United State Congress for the 17th District of New York State which covered Madison and Herkimer Countries. He served from 1817-1819 (during which time he was chairman of Committee On Expenditures in the Post Office Department) and again from 1821-1823.  He was a Democratic Presidential Elector in the elections of 1812, 1844, and 1852. 

    Thomas Hill Hubbard married Phebe Hubbard. They had 11 children (only one died at as a child). Their son Frederick served as Superintendent of Construction on various sections of the New York and Erie Railroad Bridges and later became assistant engineer of the Michigan Southern and Michigan Central Railroads. Another son Bela also moved to Michigan where he became a noted geologist, naturalist, explorer, writer and civic leader. 

    The Hubbards moved to Utica in 1824. There Thomas Hill Hubbard formed a partnership with Greene C. Bronson. In 1825, he was appointed Clerk of the New York State Supreme Court. He held this position until 1835.

    Thomas Hill Hubbard was one of the founders of Hamilton College and Hamilton Academy. He was a trustee of Utica Free Academy. He was the first president of the Board of Director of the Utica Lunatic Asylum.

    Thomas Hill Hubbard passed away on May 21, 1857. His wife Phebe passed away on Nov 1, 1871. They are interred in Plot 9 Lot 9 in Forest Hill Cemetery.
