Robert Stanton Williams
Robert Stanton Williams was born in Utica on Sept 10, 1828 to William and Sophia Wells Williams. In 1836 the family moved to Tonawanda, NY. When he was ten he was an apprentice to Henry Ivison (who was an apprentice to Robert's father) at his bookstore in Auburn, NY. In 1842, the strain of over many duties took a toll in his health he was compelled to seek the rest of country life at the farm of his uncle James Wells in New Hartford, NY. In 1844, he moved to Brooklyn and attended school for a term. In the winter he returned to Auburn where he remained until Sept 1846. He then entered Cortland Academy until March 1848.
In July 1849, Robert Stanton Williams received an appointment as a route agent in the railway mail service between Buffalo and Albany he resigned in 1852. That year he returned to Utica to take care of his brother during a fatal illness. He secured a place as a bookkeeper in the City Bank. In October 1854, he started working at the Oneida National Bank as a bookkeeper. A few months later he was made teller. In 1863 he was promoted to the chair of managing cashier and was also elected a director. In 1886, he was elected president. He worked there for 42 years.
In 1879, Robert Stanton Williams became a member of the Utica Cemetery Association (now Forest Hill) during which time they brought a tract of 150 acres adjoining the cemetery. The same year he joined the Utica Cemetery Association Mr. Williams and others organized a company that provided telephone service within a 15 mile circuit about Utica. In 1882, a new company known as the Central New York Telephone and Telegraph Company with formed with a capital of $500,000. Robert Stanton Williams was made president. In 1880 he was elected vice-president of the Mohawk Valley Cotton Mills and in 1885 he was elected president of the company. In 1895, he was elected president of the Utica Steam Cotton Mills and also became a director of the Globe Woolen Company.
In 1893 Robert Stanton Williams helped found the Utica Public Library.
In 1854, Robert Stanton Williams married Abby Ober Doolittle. They had three children: George Huntington Williams; John Camp Williams Vice President and General Manager of Western Tube Company; and a daughter Cornelia.
Robert Stanton Williams passed away on Aug 6, 1899. Abbey died two years later. They are buried in Plot 9 Lot 4 in Forest Hill Cemetery.
