Dr. Theodore Dimon
Dr. Theodore Dimon was born in Fairfield Connecticut on September 19, 1816 to Ebenezer and Mary Sherwood Hinmen. He graduated from Yale in 1835. In 1838, he received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He practiced for a year in Stockbridge Mass, he then moved to Utica where he spent a year before moving to Auburn, NY. In 1844 he returned to Utica.
In 1849 Dr. Dimon went as a surgeon of the first company who went to California to search for gold. While in California he was elected president of the San Francisco medical society.
He returned from California in 1853 and settled again in Auburn. For a number of years he was physician at the state prison in Auburn. He resigned in 1861 to join the army. He was surgeon of the 19th New York Regiment which later became the 3rd NY artillery. While at in Newbern, N.C. he was detached and became surgeon of 2nd Maryland regiment which he remained with during the campaign of 1862. He was at Battles of Second Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, and Antietam. In October 1862 he was ordered back to his regiment who were in North Carolina. He was mustered out of service in May of 1863. After the Battle of Gettysburg in July of 1863 he volunteered to assist in taking care of the wounded. Governor Horatio Seymour appointed him state agent which office he old until the war was over taking care of sick and wounded New York solders in government hospitals.
Dr. Dimon returned to Auburn and resumed his practice. In 1869, he was reappointed surgeon of the state prison. He was superintendent of the state asylum for insane criminals from 1879 to 1882. In 1881 he was called as an expert witness in the trial of President James A. Garfield's Assassin Charles Guiteau.
Dr. Theodore Dimon married Sarah Watson Williams (aunt to Maria and Rachael Williams Proctor founders of Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute) They had at least three children: George D., Theodore, and James Watson Williams.
Dr Theodore Dimon passed away in Auburn on July 22, 1889. Sarah followed him to the grave on May 31, 1895. Dr Dimon and Sarah are buried in the Dimon Family lot at Forest Hill Cemetery (Plot 29B lot 1392)
