Dr. Daniel C. Dye
Daniel C. Dye was born June 23, 1860 to Amassa and Caroline Hutchinson Dye in Rockwood, NY. H e studied medicine there. He graduated from the Department of Medicine and surgery of the University of Michigan in 1885.
The following fall Dr. Dye came to Utica. He also practiced in Cleveland, NY. He was house physician at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica from 1879 to July 1892. From July 1892 to until he retired in 1931 he was on the surgical staff of the Hospital. He was a member of the Oneida County Medical Society he was elected president of the society in 1896.
Other societies and associations Dr. Dye was a member of were: State Medical Society; Utica Medical Library Association; Utica Medical Club (which he helped organize); Association of Military Surgeons of the United States. For a number of years he was one of the ward physicians of Utica. Two different times (1908-09 and 1912-13) he was one of the school physicians.
On May 8, 1888 Dr. Dye enlisted as a private in the 44th Separate Company of the National Guard. A year and a half later he was made a corporal. On October 1, 1890 he received a medical commission as a first lieutenant and served in that capacity until the spring of 1899. When the Fourth Battalion was organized, he was made senior medical officer with the grade of Captain and served until 1905. Afterwards he served as assistant surgeon of the First Regiment, New York Infantry, with the grade of Captain for two years. He was promoted to Major and became regimental surgeon for the First Regiment from 1907 to 1917.
When America entered World War I Dr. Dye served as surgeon examining recruits and looking after the National Guardsmen in camp and doing guard duty in different parts of upstate New York.
On June 23, 1892 Daniel C. Dye married Jessie M. Walling. They had two children: Dan and Dorothy Jessie (who sadly passed away before both of her parents).
Dr. Dye passed away in Utica on August 31, 1934 and is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery.
