Henry R. Beebe
Henry Rumrill Beebe was born in Utica on Nov 22, 1878. He graduated from Utica Free Academy and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (with a degree in Civil Engineering). During Summer vacations from college he worked for the City Engineer's office. He served one year with the US Geological Survey stream-gaging in New York and Southern Michigan.
In 1905, Henry R. Beebe formed a partnership with Frank Beach of Troy. They constructed a mile long interceptor sewer. That project was one of the steps taken by Utica in the extensive New York Central development. It made Utica one of the most important railroads points east of Buffalo.
Henry R. Beebe served as Commissioner of Public Works from 1910-1911. In 1912 he reentered the construction field with A.A. Parker. They carried out extensive contracts for New York Central in Utica including passenger and freight subways; and the temporary station and approaches which were in use while the permanent station (Union Station) was being build. They also constructed mill and reinforced concrete buildings in Utica, Rome and other sections. They also fulfilled several Barge Canal contracts. In 1928, Mr. Parker's health failed and H.R. Beebe Inc was organized. H.R. Beebe Inc completed several contracts for Utica Gas and Electric Co; built numerous factory and office buildings for various industries in Utica, Rome, and Buffalo. They also constructed some school buildings in Utica.
In 1916, Henry R. Beebe run but was defeated as State Engineer and Surveyor.
In 1938, Gov Lehman appointed Henry R. Beebe to the Advisory Committee of the State Insurance Fund.
Henry R. Beebe served as Public Service Commissioner 1936-1937. During his tenure as Commissioner he flew to New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Texas in a survey of parking meters. He wrote his observations as an aid for their eventual installation in Utica. Mr. Beebe also made an exhaustive study of the Police Pension fund which later became part of the State Retirement Fund.
Henry R. Beebe served as President of Peerless Quarries Inc; Boonville Sand Corp.; and Citizen First Bank in Frankfort, NY. He was also secretary of the Brunner Manufacturing Company.
Henry R. Beebe was an associate member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Fort Schuyler Club. He was also a member of the Water Commission since its orgnaization.
On June 24, 1911 Henry R. Beebe married D. Mertice Sessions who passed away Nov 25, 1942. They had two children Emily and Frederick.
Henry R. Beebe passed away in 1943. He is buried in the Sessions Family Lot in Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica.
