John Batchelor
John Batchelor was born on November 22, 1841 to Daniel. He was educated in Utica Public Schools. As a young man he was employed in the office of the Utica Morning Herald. While working there he learned the typesetter trade. He stayed with the Herald until he left to be a typesetter for the Utica Evening Telegram where he stayed for two years.
John Batchelor left the printing trade to enter the family business (Batchelor Brothers) a well known seed store which also sold commercial fertilizers and farm and garden supplies on Liberty Street. He bought out the interests of his father and uncle to become the sole owner. In 1886, John Batchelor sold the business.
After selling the seed business John Batchelor worked at the Post Office. He rose to the position of Chief of the Distributing Department.
For about six years John Batchelor was a member of the Neptune Fire Co. No 5.
John Batchelor was interested in the plumbing business his brother's conducted.
From 1883-85 John Batchelor was was supervisor of the 4th Ward. He served as chairman of the Committee on Sheriff's Accounts. Was also a member of the County Building and Orphan Asylums Committees.
From 1887-1889 John Batchelor was Sheriff of Oneida County. After his term as Sheriff he was appointed Chief Clerk in the Office of the State Engineer and Surveyor where he stayed fro five years.
In 1900, John Batchelor was appointed Chief Supervisor of the US Census Bureau for Oneida and Oswego Counties. Later he served as the Supervisor of the Collection of Manufacturing Statistics for Oneida County. In 1910, John Batchelor was one of the Census takers for Oneida County.
From 1908 to 1909 John Batchelor was overseer of the poor.
John Batchelor was active in the Republican County Committee. He served as Secretary and Chairman.
John Batchelor was a member of the Imperial Council No 70, Royal Arcanum, and of the Arcanum Club.
John Batchelor passed away on Sept 9, 1914 at his home 1212 Howard Ave. He is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery.
