Miles C. Comstock

Miles Chester Comstock was born May 7, 1823 in Hartwick, Otsego Co, NY. He was educated in the district school in Westford, NY. During the summer he worked in the family farm.
In 1840, at the age of 17 Miles Comstock left farming and came to Utica. He accepted a job in a grocery store. The store failed and he returned to the family farm. When he returned to Utica he started working in the store of Elijah G. Peckham. The store was later sold to T.K. Butler. Five years after Mr. Butler brought the store Mr. Comstock was admitted as a partner. In 1855? he organized the firm of Dickinson and Comstock.
In 1868, the manufacturing company of Comstock Brothers was formed. Miles C. Comstock later brought the sugar manufacturing company of Utica and Hard (or Hurd) Brothers of Oneida and incorporated them as the Comstock Manufacturing Co. The plant was located on West Street.
In 1855? Miles C. Comstock was elected City Treasurer. In 1871, he was elected Mayor. During his term as Mayor he helped raise a considerable amount of money to be sent to Chicago to help rebuild after the great fire. In 1875, he was appointed as Police and Fire Commissioner. He served one term. In 1883? he was appointed to be manager of the State Hospital (he served five years)
Miles C. Comstock was very involved in railroads. He took a major part in the building of the Utica and Susquehanna Valley Railroad and its subsequent leasing to the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad. He was also active in the forming of the Unadilla Valley Railroad.
Miles C. Comstock was a member of the following: Utica Mechanic's Association; Mendelssohn Club; Oneita Club; Fort Schuyler; and was a charter member and later treasurer of Faxton Lodge, F. and A.M. He was director of the First National Bank.
Miles C. Comstock was married twice: Emily M. Rossboom and Helen North. He had two children.
Miles C. Comstock passed away on Feb 23, 1894. He is buried in Plot 31B Lot 1205 in Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica.
