Ida Butcher

    Ida Jane Butcher was born Jan 16, 1865 to Charles M. and Sarah Morgan Butcher. She graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1882. In 1887, she graduated from Vassar College. She taught in the Cecily Baker School in Utica. She taught the following: Arithmetic; Algebra; and Latin, and later English Composition. She also taught English at UFA. Ms. Butcher was also a private tutor in Latin; Greek; and Math.

    Ida J. Butcher was a charter member of the New Century Club, which was a club for Women. She hold many positions including: Recording Secretary; Instructor of the Browning Class; Chairman of the Printing Committee; and had charge of the writing and publishing of the Club's Yearbook. She was connected with all the departments except the music department. At the time of her death she had attended more of the meetings of the club than any other member.

    Ida J. Butcher was affiliated with the NYS Federation of Women's Clubs. Served as a member of the department of education of the federation. Was chairman of it from 1906 to 1926 and afterwards was honorary chairman. She was also in the following committees: Scholarship; Literature and Library Extension.

    With Frances A. Goodale and Miss. Elizabeth G. Brown she edited the outline history of Utica.

    Ida J. Butcher was Secretary of the Committee of Summer Playgrounds, which later became the Utica Playground and Recreation Assoc. In 1916, was appointed to the City Recreation Committee which she served for three years.

    Ida J. Butcher was also a member of the following: Working Women's League; Political Equality Club (served as director); Women's Civic Club; and State League of Women Voters. Served on the Interstate Research Committee on Moral Education.

    Ida J. Butcher passed away on Jan 5, 1934 and is buried in Plot 40 Lot 2200 of Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica.
