Dr. Frederick Lenggenhager

   Dr. Frederick Lenggenhager was born in 1862 in Switzerland. He came to Utica as a boy. His father run a drug store and was a noted chemist.

    Frederick Lenggenhager studied medicine for a year under Ex-Surgeon General William H. Watson before going to Ohio to study. He studied under one of the most distinguished surgeons of the west, Professor Snyder of Cleveland. in 1885, he graduated from Cleveland Homeopathic Hospital. Dr. Lenggenhager took the highest rank in the matter of scholarship ever attained at the institution.

    After graduating Dr. Lenggenhager moved back to Utica. He was president of the Oneida County Homeopathic Medical Society. He read papers before the State Society. Dr. Lenggenhager succeeded in curing by intubation the first case of Diphtheritic croup in Utica.

    Dr. Lenggenhager was a member or was connected with the following groups: Faxton Lodge of Masons; Utica Citizens Corps; Imperial Council of Royal Arcanum; Oneida County Sportmen's Club;  The Utica Toboggan Club and Gymnasium Association.

    Dr. Lenggenhager passed away on Dec 4, 1888. His death was the result of his extraordinary devotion to the science of his profession. It was caused by acute septicaemia, following diphtheretic infection. He was holding a child with diphtheria on his lap. A pin the the child's clothing punctured the skin of Dr. Lenggenhager's right hand. When he was asked if he was not apprehensive of danger from the wound, he replied that he wished to see what effect would be.

    Dr. Lenggenhager is buried in Plot 39 Lot 2241 of Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica. He has the following epitaph: "Dutiful in his life. In death a victim to duty."
