George A. Clark

     George Austin Clark was born Jul 21, 1826 in Sauquoit, NY to Chester D. and Hannah Avery Clark. His maternal grandfather Rev. David Avery was a noted chaplain of the American Revolution. He served from Bunker Hill to Yorktown. Rev. Avery assisted in funeral services of Gen. Warren.

    George A. Clark attended local schools including Utica Academy. After leaving school he served as a clerk for five years in Dr. Peckham's Drug Store.

    In 1849, George A. Clark went to California during the Gold Rush with a company of 32. He was a member of the Utica Mining Co. He worked on the north fork of the American River. He was quite successful. He returned to Utica in 1853.

    When George A. Clark returned to Utica he started working at his father's store. They made and sold buckskin gloves and dealt in house furnishing goods. He later brought his father out. Later stopped manufacturing and brought from other dealers. He also sold fishing tackle, sporting goods and toys. In 1881, he admitted Hugh J. Horrock and James H. English as partners. The business became George A. Clark and Co. It later was incorporated as Clark-Horrocks Co.

    George A. Clark was a member of the following: Utica Mechanics Association and Oneida Historical Society. He was a honorary member of the Utica Citizens Corps.

     George A. Clark passed away on Mar 15, 1908 and is buried in the family lot in Plot 12B Lot 179 of Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica.
