Frederick Gillmore
Frederick Gillmore was born in Utica to Charles Dexter and Mary A. Lewis Dexter on Feb 23, 1873.
After he was done with school Frederick Gillmore got a job at a wholesale clothing store in Utica. In 1891, got a job as a lineman in the office of the City Surveyor.
In 1903, Frederick Gillmore was appointed clerk to the Board of Assessors. Two years later he was elected to be on the board. In 1906, he was elected sheriff and was the first sheriff to occupy the new quarters at the court house. During his last year as sheriff Frederick Gillmore run for mayor and won. After his term is Mayor was up he declined renomination. For a little while he was connected with the Lewis-Wellar Company.
In 1923, Frederick Gillmore run for Mayor again and won. Was reelected in 1925 by the largest plurality given to a mayoral candidate at that time. During his administration many important civic improvements took place including: Oriskany St. was developed; miles of pavement were laid; traffic lights were installed; the municipal golf course in Roscoe Conkling Park was laid out; repaving of Genesee St. in South Utica; and the relocation of the Trolley Tracks to the center of the street.
Frederick Gillmore retired in 1928. He run for Mayor again in 1931 but lost. In 1933, he was elected City Treasurer, he hold that office until his death.
Frederick Gillmore married Anna M. Hickey. They had three children (2 daughters and one son)
Frederick Gillmore was a member of the following organizations: Utica Lodge Elks; Fort Schuyler Council; Royal Arcanum; The Loyal Order of Moose; and the Knights of Maccabees.
Frederick Gillmore passed away on Feb 11, 1938. He is buried in the family lot (Plot 11 Lot 478) of Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica.
