Dr. James G. Hunt
Dr. James G. Hunt was born June 21, 1845 in Litchfield, NY to Dr. Isaac and Mary Ingersoll Hunt. He graduated from Utica Free Academy.
James G. Hunt's first job was as a clerk in the Ilion Bank. He later accepted a position at the Utica Post Office. He then moved to Buffalo where he worked as a bookkeeper.
James G. Hunt studied medicine in his father's office before he entered the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He afterwards attended Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia where he graduated in 1871. At the same time Mr. Hunt studied at the Philadelphia School of Anatomy. He then returned to Utica. After being partners with his father he practiced alone.
In 1872, Dr. Hunt was appointed Physician of the Utica Jail. The following year he was appointed Coroner of Oneida County, he was elected three times. The same year he was also appointed Health Officer by the Common Council, which office he hold for almost 20 years. In 1884, Dr. Hunt was made superintendent of Registration of Vital Statistics.
On Jan 23, 1874 James G. Hunt married Ella Middleton. They had four children.
Dr. James G. Hunt was local doctor for the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad; The New York, Ontario and Western Railroad; and the West Shore Railroad.
Dr. Hunt was Physician and Surgeon in charge of the Masonic Home; Chief Surgeon at Faxton Hospital; Surgeon at St. Luke's Hospital; and Surgeon at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.
In 1880, Dr. James G. Hunt was appointed a Commissioner of the State Board of Health, he served until 1886. He was one of the incorporators of the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and served as its physician. Appointed in 1889 as Surgeon of the Board of the US Pension Examiners.
In 1887, Dr. James G. Hunt received the Republican nomination for Mayor of Utica. He had to decline the nomination.
Dr. James G. Hunt was a member of a number of organizations including: NYS Association of Railway Surgeons; Utica Citizen Corps (was President 1886-87); Oneida County Medical Society; Utica Medical Library Association (was President in 1886); and Fort Schuyler Club.
Dr. James G. Hunt was a trustee of the Utica Female Academy and a director of the Globe Woolen Mills.
Dr. James G. Hunt passed away on May 17, 1914 and is buried in Plot 64 Lot 4024 of Forest Hill Cemetery.
